History of the Red Book®
Excerpt from "A History of the American Academy of Pediatrics: June 1930-June 1951" by Marshall Carleton Pease, BS, MD
"Immunization Procedures" (1938) [now known as the "Red Book"] has appeared under a varying list of titles, such as "Immunization and Therapeutic Procedures for Acute Infectious Diseases" (1939), "Therapeutic Procedures for Acute Infectious Diseases and on Biologicals" (1943), etc. "Immunization Procedures" first appeared as an eight-page booklet (1938). With each succeeding publication its size was expanded, until by 1948 eighty-four pages were required to briefly cover the material which it seemed necessary to include between its covers. The series of eight issues quite accurately mirrors the rapid increase in the therapeutic agents which were considered necessary for the successful treatment of acute infectious diseases, between 1937 and 1948.
Excerpt from "American Academy Of Pediatrics: The First 50 Years (1930-1980)" by James G. Hughes, BA, MD, FAAP
A mimeographed report was first put out by this committee [the Committee on Immunization and Therapeutic Procedures for Acute Infectious Diseases, now known as the Committee on Infectious Diseases (COID)]. The succeeding year, 1938, the report was published in pamphlet form and a revision of the pamphlet was made almost every year. There was immediately a great demand for the pamphlet from physicians, students, health departments, teachers, pharmaceutical houses, etc. The publishing and distribution of the pamphlet was financed by the Academy Central Office from a pamphlet and publication fund that was created by the Executive Board in 1962. The publication is now known as the Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases (Red Book)....
